10 funny and warm childhood memories of visiting grandparents in the countrysideWho among us hasn’t been a child looking forward to summer vacation? And what adventures awaited us if we spent the summer somewhere in the countryside with our grandparents! It is these happy moments of childhood that we would like to remind you of through the following short stories. 1. “When I was about 5 years old, I was allowed to walk near my grandmother’s yard. My mother brought me to the village and stayed for the weekend. She came out to call me for lunch, but she didn’t find me in the yard or outside the yard. Now I realize how scared she was. When the whole family started looking for me, I appeared from the garden. Stuffed, dragging my child’s bike through the bushes, I tiredly handed my mother and grandmother the dandelions with the words: “I barely found the most beautiful flowers for you.” I don’t think they scolded me much at the time, although they should have.” 2. “One day, while cooking her specialty soup, my grandmother asked me to bring some carrots from the garden. I decided to ask if she needed small or large carrots. Without hesitation, my grandmother replied that I should bring medium-sized carrots. After a lot of time passed, my grandmother followed me to the garden and what she saw shocked her. I was standing in the middle of the garden, pulling carrots out of the ground, and saying: “No, this is not a medium carrot,” I was planting each one back. When she asked me what I was doing, I calmly replied: “Grandma, how else can I find out which of these carrots is a medium-sized one?” That year, my grandmother only sent me to the garden to eat raspberries.” 3. “I remember very well how wonderful my summer days were at my grandmother’s house, but I remember one summer night the most. I couldn’t sleep for a long time, so my grandmother and I went to the garden. My delight was overwhelming when I saw hedgehogs eating mulberries under a mulberry tree. A whole flock of hedgehogs at the same time! Such warm moments will always remain in my memory.” 4. “I remember one summer in the village for the rest of my life. I had a friend in the neighborhood, Anya, who also came from the city for the summer. One day we wanted to make beautiful wreaths for ourselves and our eyes were drawn to purple flowers. The fact that they tingled our fingers did not scare us, and with the enthusiasm of novice florists we stuck them thickly into our woven wreaths. However, we were unable to capture this beauty without help. Who knew that burdocks are not just beautiful, but also so clingy. We returned home sobbing, and the sight of our hair sticking out in all directions scared my grandfather, who came out to hear us crying.” ![]() 5. “My grandparents had a chicken coop, but for some reason I decided to take a chicken egg from the refrigerator. I wrapped it in a small towel and carried it with me almost everywhere, giving it the warmth of my hands and blowing hot air on it. Every day, I fought my curiosity to keep from unwrapping it to see if the chick was already hatching. One night during dinner, I forgot my “miracle” in the kitchen and remembered it only in the morning. When I saw the unfolded towel and the eggs for breakfast, it was hard to stop my tears. But my grandfather managed to do it: he handed me a small and yellow fluffy animal in his palms. It turned out that he and my grandmother had long ago noticed my futile efforts and decided to make me happy, and at the same time buy a young generation of future layers for their chicken coop. I was so surprised and happy at the same time when I saw a dozen more little chicks in the yard, but mine was special, because it was hatched thanks to me!” 6. “I loved coming to my grandmother’s village as a child and as a teenager. You sleep as much as you want, wake up to the aroma of fresh pancakes, have breakfast, and can walk around almost all day. In the evenings, I usually helped with some household chores, and once I asked to go for a walk with the boys before sunset. The day before, my grandmother was doing laundry, and I couldn’t find my jeans. Back then, “boiled and chewed” jeans were in fashion. When I asked my grandmother, she said, almost in tears, that she couldn’t iron them completely. After washing them, she saw my jeans all wrinkled and thought that the water was too hot and made them shrink so much. Grandma tried so hard to iron them that I could only thank her. It was only before the next wash that I told her about those strange fashion trends.” 7. “My family still tells me this funny story. When I was a little girl of about 4 years old, I loved to run around chickens and goats and chase cats at my grandparents’ place in the village. That summer, her grandmother’s cat Murka had just given birth to kittens. They were already running around on the grass and making cute little fights. One black and white kitten got into a puddle. When I saw how dirty and wet it was, I told my dad: “Dad, I feel so sorry for this kitten. It needs to be dried so that it doesn’t get sick.” To reassure me, my father replied that my mother would lick the kitten and everything would be fine. Hearing this, I caught this black and white fluffy thing and brought it to my mom with the words: “Mom, dad said I should lick the kitten.” Apparently, now no home feast is complete without this joke.” 8. “I have had a business streak since childhood. My grandfather paid me money for collecting Colorado potato beetles. When we ran out of striped beetles in our garden, I wrote an ad for this essential service. And I managed to make a little money from some neighbors until I had competitors. The news of the new “business” quickly spread through the village, and within a week, the same enterprising kids were in almost every garden. To buy the coveted Dandy console, I had to retrain to swat flies in the summer kitchen. Thank you, grandpa, for the generous “tip” and the first game cartridge as a gift.” 9. “That summer, I was 6 years old, and my sister Sonia had just turned 2. One day, she asked her grandmother for a ‘red berry’. My grandmother brought strawberries, and Sonya tasted them, but said they were the wrong berry. For the little princess, I went to pick raspberries, and my grandfather climbed a tree to get the ripest cherries. However, Sonya told us again with determination: “Wrong berry”. We were all just curious. We had already brought cherries, currants, viburnum, tomatoes, and a slice of watermelon to Sonya’s little hands. But this mysterious “berry” could not be found until her grandmother began to cook okroshka. When Sonya saw a radish in her hands, she shouted with joy: “Oh, a red berry!”. We somehow didn’t think of that.” 10. When I was about 8 years old, walking in my grandmother’s garden, I pulled a young carrot out of the ground, went to wash it, and sat down on the bench to crunch it deliciously. And then it dawned on me: now I’m going to help my grandmother, she’ll be so happy! I pulled out almost all the young carrots, came back with a proud look and almost 2 buckets of not fully ripe harvest. No, my grandmother didn’t scold me too much, it’s just that all the dishes she cooked for a month had carrots in them. But I didn’t love carrots any less, and I only loved my grandmother more. You have to invent so many dishes to keep the good stuff alive!” Grandparents hold a special place in our hearts. They have always surrounded us with boundless love and care, and continued to do so despite our pranks and mischief. Thanks to these dear people, our childhood was even more joyful and bright. |
