The parable of the glass of waterA professor began his lecture by taking a glass of water in his hand. He held it up so that everyone could see it and asked the students: – How much do you think this glass weighs? The class whispered loudly. – “About 200 grams! No, it must be 300 grams! Or maybe even all 500!” came the answers. – I won’t really know for sure until I weigh this glass. But that’s not necessary now. My question is this: what happens if I hold the glass like this for a few minutes? – Nothing! – Indeed, nothing will happen, the professor replied. – What happens if I hold this glass in my outstretched hand for, say, two hours? – Your hand will start to hurt. – And if you hold it for a whole day? – Your arm will go numb, you will have a severe muscle disorder and paralysis. You might even have to go to the hospital, – said one of the students. – Do you think the weight of the glass will change if I hold it all day? – No!-the students answered in confusion. – What should I do to fix it? – Just put the glass on the table! – said one student cheerfully. – Exactly! – the professor replied happily. – It’s the same with all of life’s difficulties. Think about a problem for a few minutes and it will be right there with you. Think about it for a few hours and it will start to suck you in. If you think about it all day, it will paralyze you. You can think about the problem, but it usually doesn’t lead to anything. Its “weight” will not decrease. The only way to deal with a problem is to take action. Solve it or put it aside. There is no point in carrying heavy stones on your soul that paralyze you. |
