Our grandmothers are irreplaceable…

Yesterday I was waiting for my daughter to come home from the dance. I was sitting in the hallway. A grandmother came to pick up her granddaughter, about five years old. The granddaughter had already danced. The grandmother was helping her put on a jacket-hat, and the granddaughter was chatting: “Grandma, can we go home right away? Grandma, what’s bigger-a million or a billion? Grandma, do you know how to dance?” Grandma answers, smiles, and grumbles slightly: “You are such a talker…”

They are walking, the granddaughter is jumping, the grandmother is limping a little. She is carrying bags, she bought something on the way. What is our grandmother without bags in her hand? She probably bought her granddaughter grapes or bananas.

Grandmothers, our sweet grandmothers. The most hardy. The most reliable. What would we do without you? We would be lost… Our grandmothers taught us to read about the Cockroach and count to a million; our grandmothers spent hours walking with us in a snowy park; our grandmothers cooked us meatball soup, the best soup in the world.

Then we spend the rest of our lives looking for the tastes and smells that our grandmother gave us as children. And we don’t find them… Our grandmothers are our favorites. They are irreplaceable. What a blessing that we had you and still have you.
